Quiet on the Radio #002
May 24th, 2009It’s been a wet week here in Christchurch, much to my chagrin. My ideal afternoon includes an aimless stroll, and I’m significantly less inclined to pursue that with the perma-drizzle in effect.
I kid you not, Friday afternoon there was a perfect storm of sleet, sunshine, heavy gusts of wind and a full blown rainbow. Ridiculous. I took a nap.
It’s nappy central around here. My beautiful, pregnant sister has been receiving shipments of cloth diapers. The days of the rubber pants are gone. This kid will be a dapper, faux-fur wearing lady-killer.
New Hotness
You may have noticed the arrival of a new, pretty lady sitting at the style.css desk. (Those of you joining us via Google Reader, go ahead and hit that “V”.)
We tightened up the old theme with a few changes: fixed width, a darker color for the main font, and we swapped the sage green for a firebrand red.
The mini-redesign demanded I spend a little time in my favorite 16 x 16 grid sandbox.ico. You may have to clear your cache to notice. I will be your favorite MSP object. (All I can hope for is that jit.friend.sean got the reference.)
No One Takes Your Freedom
I’ve been thinking a lot about “free”, specifically in relation to the value of music. Yesterday I began a series of articles I’ve been brewing on the topic.
Some might call me a freetard….
The Internet did not ask permission of the music industry before lopping off it’s head. On the bright side, as can naturally be expected: all sorts of pretty flowers are growing up from its decaying corpse.
(Hint: the flowers are free.)
An excellent mash-up by dj earworm. (For now) you can get the mp3 here.
Free Album of the Week
DJ Danger Mouse announced (read: leaked) his new album Dark Night of the Soul. The album is chock full of collaborations, which becomes a legal nightmare for music labels. In a clever move to circumvent red tape, the album package will include a jewel case, album art booklet, and a blank CD-R, with instructions to apply the music yourself. Read more about the story from Tech Dirt.
I’m loving hearing from such old friends:
- Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips
- Jason Lytle of Grandaddy
- Vic Chesnutt
- Julian Casablancas of The Strokes
- Iggy Pop
To name a few. (Wikipedia.) (Should I know who Sparklehorse is?)
Endorsement for an Unconventional Anti-Marketer
I’ve been following blogger/traveller/non-conformist Chris Guillebeau for many months now. I recently purchased his Unconventional Guide to Working for Yourself. We exchanged a few emails. (He has a very classy habit of writing his customers a brief thank you email from his Gmail.) That opened the door for me to tell him how much I enjoyed his writing.
With my permission, Chris included a snippet of my email in a recent article: Why People Hate Marketers.
I have more to say about Chris in an upcoming post. He’s a free believer too. (It was his generous free products that encouraged me to become a patron of his work.) More on that soon.
Copland
I’m super stoked for next weekend. Weather permitting, I’ll be tramping the Copland Track with my friends Ryan and Elizabeth. We’re meeting tomorrow night to plan. I really hope the weather allows, it will be my only chance to get over and check out the west coast.
Oh yes, and there will be natural hot springs.
And Finally
A big congratulations (and sigh of relief) goes out to the new home owners.
Let us celebrate. And often.
Until we again,
J~
