Get Back to Work

November 9th, 2010

Emphasis is mine.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work … It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions … It’s gonna take awhile … You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

Thanks as always, to Dan for bringing this to my attention.

Briefly, Hello!

August 21st, 2010
Briefly, Hello!

Welcome.

In as few words as possible. The duration of pause contrasted with the volume of significant activity deserves remark. (And whenever I consider posting some inane link, I remind myself that I dare not before providing an update on my situation.)

I am alive!

On August 21st, Julie and I exchanged vows of commitment to each other. Boom! And the thought of it still makes me grin like a fool.

The wedding was a success! I hadn’t realized until I began writing this that I needed some time before I could dissemble my experiences. As I said, it was a success, but not without it’s share of drama. And I’ve probably got a few essays in me with regards to throwing a DIY wedding. (And the awesomeness of awesome family members….) I am at work on a separate little website that will host photos, video, our vows, etc. Soon.

After the wedding, we took a road trip to stay with a friend in Montréal. It was record breakingly hot. Wink. Then we spent a week in Punta Cana, Dominican Republica. It was also. Very. Hot. And again, lessons learned, essays are waiting for the comfortable numbness of distance – and then BLAMMO, you won’t believe me.

I am still teaching with Rainbow Songs. I love it. Julie has left her nightmare employ at a gov call center and returned to Passport Canada. On the one condition that she is not allowed to pick up any cute boys.

With some family help, we are converting our detached garage into a studio-workshop. Empty of unnecessarily kept objects. Replace garage door with a proper door and window. Insulate. Heat. Sew and sound design.

I leave you there. Let the inanity recommence.

Holy Fuck playing “Latin America” (Myspace)

THIS makes me drool. And my entire body responds. Yes, this is a mark on the horizon. I want to move toward this kind of material. I could watch this video 12 times in a row and get new inspirations for what they might be doing.

I’d wager the kit mics are coming back through their FX rigs. Any other thoughts?

And I love the utter absence of a computer.

First World Problems 2.0

May 29th, 2010

I was relistening to the first version of FWP that I posted, and bleh, not happy. So I’ve tinkered a bit more, and I thought I’d share. I’ve given the lead guitar more shimmer. And then went cymbal happy.

Wish. I. Could. Actually. Drum.

FIrst World Problems 2.0

[Two posts in one day! What am I... bored? Julie must be away for the weekend.]

Gonna go hit the bbq, Crown Royal, then Mario 2.

Marry Me! I Like You and I Love You

May 29th, 2010

Julie and I decided to send an electronic invitation to all of our wedding guests who are internet savvy. So rather than making hundreds of fancy cards, we made a little video.

Specific details were with held so that we could share the video through YouTube. I am quite happy with how it turned out. It was a fun way to spend a couple hours.

We have fun.
